My sister is a very avid gardener, and recently she has been complaining to me that her new plants aren’t growing as well as she would have expected. I will be sure to suggest to her that she checks the salinity of her soil!

I’m thinking of building a shade awning using 50% shade cloth for my garden, the last couple of hot summers have been brutal on my garden. Is this really worth the time and labor.
Thank you. The Youngs

Comment on Is it Alkali or Alkaline? by organicforecast https://organicforecast.org/2017/09/is-it-alkali-or-alkaline/#comment-3226 Thu, 22 Feb 2018 18:27:33 +0000 https://organicforecast.org/?p=3496#comment-3226 Hello Connie-

The Eagle Mountain area soils are generally very coarse textured (high sand content) and tend to be fairly high in pH (or alkalinity). In fact, in many areas, there appears to be pH levels (>8.5) and sodium contents (Sodium Adsorption Ratio, or SAR >10) that would indicate a tendency to be sodic (over-saturated with sodium). This condition can cause issues with soil structure breakdown, low infiltration, and plant toxicity in some very high cases.

Other areas are much higher in lime (or calcium carbonate) content. I have seen some soils in the area as high as 50% lime content (or very high, soft limestone content) that probably makes them quite whitish in color below the surface.

So there are a variety of soils in the area, and most display various common properties to arid zone, desert soils (high pH, high lime content, some pockets of sodium excess, some areas of higher salinity, and sandy textures).

This is a lovely time of year to be in reflection about what is important to us and I will inocaporrte it into my usual end-of-year reflective questions and practice. Thank you.[]
